Lafayette Parish School System Pre-K

LPSS Pre-K contains classrooms within the school district that are funded by LA4, 8G and Title 1 grants. This program provides daily education to 4 year olds in Lafayette Parish and follows the school system calendar. The grants first service children from at-risk families on a per child basis in their home zone if available.  Due to limited seats in home zones, Truman Early Childhood Education Center accommodates up to 500 overflow students from most zones.  Transportation is also provided.

Early Head Start Programs

Early Head Start (EHS) is a federally funded early childhood development program aimed to assist at risk, low-income families. Children and families enrolled in the center-based program option receive comprehensive child development services in a center-based setting, supplemented with home visits by the child's teacher and other EHS staff. The home-based program option offers children and families support through weekly home visits and bi-monthly group socialization experiences. EHS also serves children through locally designed family child care options, in which certified child care providers care for children in their homes. UWA Early Head Start provides the following services: early education both in and out of the home; parenting education; comprehensive health and mental health services for mothers and children; nutrition education; and family support services.

Head Start Programs

Head Start is a federal program for preschool children three to five years of age in low-income families. Its aim is to prepare children for success in school through an early learning program. The Head Start program is managed by local nonprofit organizations. Children who attend Head Start engage in various education activities. They also receive free medical and dental care, have healthy meals and snacks, and enjoy playing indoors and outdoors in a safe setting. Head Start helps all children succeed, even those with disabilities.

Head Start provides children with work that helps them grow mentally, socially, emotionally, and physically. The staff in these programs recognizes parents as the first and most important teachers of their children. They welcome parental involvement in the programs and will work as partners to help both the parent and child progress.
